Coach Billy Council led his 7th grade Rens team through some tough competition this past weekend to capture the crown at the King James Classic 2013 tournament. New Rens walked away with a 7-0 record for the weekend, playing wth heart and tenacity. New Rens definitely brought the fight with them to Akron, Ohio, as they outplayed Wall 2 Wall in the quarter finals 53-43, then took it to the Metro Sixers 59-56 in the semifinals and then delivered the knockout in the championship game when Chicago Select went down 47-42.  Mark Twain nicely put it, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."  You can expect the best for this team is yet to come.  Coaches and players alike have accepted their marching orders. Onward and upward they shall go.

13U Rens Give Back
2/21/13 - 02:17 PM

On Tuesday, the Seventh Grade Rens continued in the footsteps of the All Star Weekend’s NBA Cares program when they offered an afternoon basketball camp for 40 youngsters ages 6 – 10 at Lower East Side’s P.S. 140.  Consistent with the Rens mission of fostering in its players the importance of giving back to the community, Rens players led by Director of Basketball/Head Coach Billy Council and Assistant Coach/Program Coordinator Everton McIntyre gave up their vacation day to run the program.  Basketball drills and pick-up games as well as trivia contests and obstacle courses led up to a three-point shooting contest pitting the program’s older youth and after-school staff against the Rens players.  The tight competition ended in a highly contested split decision.  The After-School Youth Development Program at P.S. 140 is part of The Educational Alliance, a community-based organization that offers a wide range of programs integrating education, social services and recreation throughout downtown Manhattan.  The day was so enriching for all of the participants that it was impossible to determine who benefitted the most.
