IS8 NIKE ACTION RENS (ARTIE) DECIMATE NJ TRAILBLAZERS
10/16/13 - 10:55 PM

CORONA, NY - Sunday at the iS8/Nike Fall Classic at Elmcor, the games were a bit lopsided, with blowouts seemingly the order of the day.

Here is a recap of the day's action.

The Rens (Artie) decimate NJ Trailblazers 77-56

This game, like many of the games on Sunday, was over by the end of the 1st quarter. Ryan Murphy (Fairfield Prep, CT '16) set the pace in the early going, as the new point guard for The Rens was in control making effective passes in transition, while also burying a pair of threes. Travis Atson (Christ the King '15) was the main beneficiary in the opening quarter of Murphy's passes, breaking out and getting the ball down the floor, finishing with 2 big throwdowns. The duo combined for 23 first quarter points as The Rens jumped out to a 15 point lead.

It only got worse in the 2nd quarter as Adonis Delarosa (Christ the King '14) and Rawle Alkins (Christ the King '16) joined the offensive barrage, with Alkins showing a nice ability to step out and consistently connect on the long range jumper, and Delarosa as well adding versatility into his game, putting the ball on the floor and attacking the rim, which with his 6'10" frame, makes him even more dangerous if he can effectively do that in big game situations.

One of the lone bright spots for the Trailblazers was Hassan Burke (St. Benedict's Prep, NJ '14). The 6'3"' guard was the one player for the Jersey squad who seemed to not be rattled by the defense of The Rens, as he was able to get out and finish in the open floor, plus he was an effective shooter from the outside. His game though was not able to match the intensity and effectiveness that The Rens played with as they went up 49-25 at the half, and never looked back. Pulling their key players for much of the 4th quarter as they eased home for the win.

Atson led The Rens once again with 25 points, adding another solid effort to his statement making tournament thus far. Murphy, who was playing his first event with The Rens added 15 points, and a handful of assists, while Alkins had 13 points, 9 of which came in the 2nd quarter.

Burke led the Trailblazers with a game high 28 points in the loss.

Rawle Alkins says that Christ the King will be

Rawle Alkins had a freshman year that put him more than just on the radar.

He picked up five offers and a ton of interest while playing for Christ the King HS and the New York Rens. Now as his sophomore year begins all eyes are on the 6'4 wing.

Alkins powered and posterized his way onto the recruiting scene as he helped the Royals win the Federation T.O.C. championship. The sophomore describes his game as aggressive."I like to get to the rim but I can shoot too," he said in a recent interview.

Going into the summer already with offers from Fordham and Villanova, Alkins picked up additional offers from Cincinnati and Seton Hall even though his AAU season was abbreviated due to scholastic obligations.

In addition to the four offers, Alkins has also attracted significant interest from over 11 schools including Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, St. John's, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and most recently Detroit. Pretty good for a player going into his sophomore year.
With seniors like Fordham bound Jon Severe and Jordan Fuchs moving on, Alkins will be thrust into even more of the spotlight but he says he welcomes the challenge. "I'm looking forward to being one of the main guys," he said. "I wanna win the State championship."

Even with the absence of 2013 players, Alkins believes that this season, Christ the King will have the firepower to get the job done with returning players like Adonis Delarosa and Andre Walker.

Alkins feels that the Royals will be a team to be reckoned and made a prediction. "[Christ the King will be] Top two in the Tri-State."

It doesn't take long to realize that Rawle Alkins is already someone special.

The 6'4" freshman at Christ the King Regional HS had AAU/Travel team clamoring for his services after he helped lead the varsity team to the Federation T.O.C. championship. Playing with the NY Rens 17U basketball program Alkins continues to excel and colleges are starting to take notice.

NYCHoops.net caught up with the Rens 17U head coach Artie Cox and spoke to him about the outstanding freshman and his recruitment. "He surprises me every time I see him," said Cox. "He always does something new. Today he had those put-backs that were just incredible."

Gifted with superior athleticism, Alkins displayed his hops and defensive ability along with a thunderous dunk that had heads turning. In addition, the freshman unleashed a reliable perimeter set shot as well as the ability to take a defender off the dribble. Second in scoring only to Fordham bound Jon Severe, Alkins dropped 15 points which put the Rens into the iS8/Nike Spring HS Classic playoffs as they beat the NY Panthers.

On the recruitment tip, Coach Cox said he has never seen the interest in a player, this early in his high school career. Alkins already holds an offer from Fordham and has significant interest from Kentucky, St. John's and West Virginia. "Florida and George Mason contacted me," said Cox. "That's this past week.

As we head into the live period it's expected the interest in Alkins will increase exponentially as he unleashes his talent upon the landscape. "Every school that sees him play has immediate interest," Cox added.

Coach Cox says that Alkins needs to work a little more on his ball handling and his pull-up jump-shot. "He doesn't jump on his shot. He has a set shot three that goes in," said Cox. Once Alkins develops a 3-point jump-shot with his leaping ability, the freshman will be almost unstoppable.

The combination of what Alkins does on the court and off the court also give him a decided advantage according to Coach Cox. "He works hard every day after school he's in the gym. He has his tutoring; working on his grades and goes right to the gym," said Cox. He wants to get better. He's a pleasure to be around."

The Rens 17U will be playing in the GymRat Challenge during Memorial Day weekend, the Rumble in the Bronx in June and in Adidas tournaments in Indy, Philly and Vegas during the July live period. - See more at:
